We are developing a new endoscope for the acquisition of an ‘optical biopsy’ image to aid the detection of early stage cancer in the upper gastrointestinal tract (oesophageal cancer). This new endoscope is able to measure properties of light which are sensitive to microscopic changes in the tissue that are invisible using current technology. However, the optical fibres used to build this endoscope present a challenge as they scramble the phase and polarisation of the input light. We are therefore developing new algorithms that are able to reliably and efficiently recover such optical information.
